Ivan Illingworth

Ivan Illingworth is a British violist currently pursuing his master’s degree at Trinity Laban, studying with Malcolm Johnston. He embarked on his musical journey in 2009 with the violin, later picking up the viola in 2013. In 2018 Ivan attended one year of Junior Trinity under Andrew Bernardi before being admitted to Trinity Laban for his undergraduate degree.

During his time at Trinity, Ivan has played roles in numerous successful projects, including leading the Symphony Orchestra, String Ensemble, New Music Recording Sessions, Shapeshifter Orchestra, and Side by Side Orchestras and chamber music collaborations with Trinity Professors, Aurora Orchestra, Philharmonia, and the Welsh National Opera. Ivan has had the privilege of studying under renowned violists - first with Nic Pendlebury and Milena Simovic before moving to Malcolm Johnston of the LSO. Ivan has also benefited from masterclasses and consultations with esteemed educators and performers including Stephen Upshaw, Sascha Bota, Roger Chase, Rivka Golani, Martin Outram, Alistair Scahill, and Pascal Siffert.

Outside of his studies, Ivan is passionate about teaching and performance. He frequently contributes to concerts and chamber music courses in central Greece as part of his collaboration with the Trikala Friends of Music Association and was an inaugural member of the New Generation Symphony Orchestra, performing at the Berlin Konzerthaus.

Ivan’s achievements have been recognized with multiple scholarships, including funding from the Headley Trust, Trinity College London, and the Byram Jeejeebhoy Award, in addition to the Band Kurtz Prize for Viola and Aiden Massey Memorial
