Maggie Higginson

Maggie Higginson is a Canadian-born artist, now living and working as a professional artist in London as part of the APT studio group in Deptford.  Her sculpture is both figurative and abstract.  She has used many materials including clay, wax, bronze, cement fondue and stone. She enjoys working with stone to create a fluid and powerful image full of life from an inert material.  She focuses on texture, and people are often drawn to the tactile surfaces of her sculptures.  Maggie’s figures always have a passion, whether it's a mother’s all-consuming love or the strength of a muscleman.
Maggie works with primary and secondary schools all over south London. She enables schools to make permanent art works from their pupils’ designs. These include stained glass windows, mosaics and sculpture.
Maggie has created many commissioned works of art in public places, and is proudest of the large caste aluminium figure of "Portage", a woman carrying a boat on her head, for Amnesty International at Charlton House, Greenwich.
If Maggie were stranded on a desert island, she would like to have with her:

A camera
A lump of clay

"I love to teach because I so enjoy seeing adults achieve a level of art that they never thought they were capable of."
