Our Teachers

Jo Girdlestone

In a variety of hats (performer, director, workshop leader, artist in residence, composer and playwright) and the occasional red nose, Jo Girdlestone has been making theatre for and with young people since the early '90's.

Jo studied Drama and Music at Kent University and Songwriting at Goldsmiths. Music has had a vital place in Jo's theatre making career, both as an actor musician and as a composer of original music and songs for a catalogue of devised youth theatre productions. Alongside teaching her creative energy is now pointing firmly towards songwriting. She composed original music and songs for the V & A Family Christmas Show (2013) and is currently working on a collaborative Early Years Song Writing Project.

Collaborations include youth theatre projects at Royal National Theatre, Richmond Theatre, Tricycle (Kilburn), Hackney Empire, Palace Theatre Watford, Roundhouse (Highbury), Union Chapel (Islington), Rosemary Branch Theatre (Islington), Wolsey Ipswich, Royal Theatre Northampton, English Teaching Theatre, Snap People's Theatre Trust, and local to home with Age Exchange (Blackheath) and Lewisham Youth Theatre.

Jo became a mum in 2009 and is thoroughly enjoying the Early Years experience with her son Nat. She's delighted to be part of the Conservatoire's Early Years creative team.

"I love teaching Early Years Drama because I love stories, I love playing and I'm ever inspired by the elasticity of children's imaginations and their endless enthusiasm for make believe. I love teaching Early Years Music too, exploring the language of music through physical play is fun, exciting and an enriching process of discovery. To lead this process is a joy and incredibly rewarding."
