Our Teachers

Jo Barwick

I grew up with a professional singer and music felt like a very personal form of expression - I always say playing the piano got me through adolescence! It has been a source of joy and creativity for me as an adult and proved to be useful in most of my jobs! I trained as an actor at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and worked as a professional Actor in the Boston area and New York City. Planning for a future as a mother, I re-trained to be a primary school teacher at Goldsmiths, specialising in the Early Years. While working as a nursery teacher in a mainstream primary school I did the first year and a term of the Steiner Kindergarten Teacher Training, and Montessori literacy and numeracy seminars. Continuing to seek and learn from good early years practice I came across the Colourstrings approach to teaching music. I was excited to see such a technically researched and practical musicianship skills class and that keeps alive the imaginative and joyful connection to music. I was trained in Colourstrings Music Kindergarten by Early Years expert, Karen Mackenzie, and have been running my own business teaching Colourstrings locally for the past 5 years. It is fantastic to be around such committed musicians as part of the Early Years team here at Blackheath Conservatoire and it is an absolute pleasure for me to share with you in the task of developing your children’s confidence and proficiency in their musicianship skills.
