Our Teachers

Chris Petrie

Chris Petrie has taught music in schools and privately and for over twelve years. As well as his work at the Conservatoire, he has been on the music staff at Eltham College for three years where he delivers part of the GCSE and A-Level Music courses. His pedagogical style is thorough and fun; he passes on a strong theoretical knowledge that enables students through a greater understanding of music, resulting in well-rounded musical education.

Besides teaching, Chris is a conductor and composer and has a busy freelance career working with orchestras across Europe, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Sinfonietta, Vienna Tonkuenstler Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Berlin, and the Oltenia State Filarmonica (Romania). He has recorded for Sony Records (France), Centaur Records (USA) and Signum Classics (UK), and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, S4C TV (Wales) and TVR (Romania).

In 2013 he founded the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of London - an orchestra consisting of London's leading young professional musicians - of which he is Artistic Driector and Principal Conductor. This orchestra presents most of their concerts in Cadogan Hall (London) and recently recorded their first CD for Centaur Records.

Chris studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he attained his BMus (hons) followed by postgraduate study on the Masters course at the Royal Academy of Music where he was awarded a MMus and a LRAM teaching dipoma.

"I love to teach because I like to make a difference and pass on a greater understanding of music so that my students can appreciate how rewarding, fulfilling and enriching music can be."
